Artsits are people who are influenced by their surroundings. We observe what surrounds us. It is said that the most successful artist is one who has observed the tiniest details of their surroundings and life. Many artists have been influenced by the circumstances around them. Hence, due to these circumstances we saw many art movements. My favorite is surrealism.

Today I will tell you what narrative structures have influenced me. An artist also gets influenced by other work. Being a writer as well I will tell some of my narrative inspirations. I would like to cover a vast area with this and so have selected a few catogories which are; short stories, screenplays andĀ comics\graphic novels. So here we go. I’ll start with short stories. And let me remind you that these are in no order.

Short Stories:

1.Cathedral by Raymond Carver:

Raymond Carver happens to be my favorite contemporary writers. His take on blind people in cathedral is just amazing. The characterization is very much 3 dimensional.

2. Toba Tek Singh by Saadat Hassan Manto:

Im a very big Manto fan. His contemporary form and his truth in writing is what makes a reader love him. This is also the same reason people hate him because he tends to show what people do not want to see. He shows people what really are. It is commendable that he took risks and delivered what he thought he should have done. Artist or no artist doing what you want and doing it the way you want is alone quite a task.

3. Kashti by Intezar Hussein:

Intezar Hussein is one ofe my favorite writers. His knowledge surpasses anybody I know or have read. His use of symobolgy to explain and progress his story is his power. How he takes a simple folk tale and incorporate it into his own subject is his own power.

4. Confessions of a Nihilist by William Starr Moake

Again a very inspiring short story. When I read this one I thought that this is what seems to go in socities where people don’t even know what nihilism is. However, their attitude is very similar to the Nihilist school of thought. This read was certainly an eye opener.

These were some of my short story inspirations. These literary pieces have moved me artistically and as a person on the same level. Try to getĀ them and read them. They are seriously worth it.

Stay tune for Comics/Graphic Novels and Screenplays/Films that inspired me over my life.

Welcome
